Happy Holidays!

Kindergarten families, we hope you are enjoying the Winter Break as much as we are.  Mrs. Davis has been on strict couch duty due to her pneumonia relapse Friday the 18th.  She was very sad to go home, but Nurse Rettig insisted,  Ultimately, it was necessary as she ended up at the ER again.  Don't worry, her teenagers and Mr. Davis have been watching over her carefully so that she will be back to her perky self by January.  Mrs. Strobel has been resting up, too.

We will start the new year with new reading groups!  Be on the look out for reading baggies.  Students will have books twice a week to read and sentences to complete twice a week.  We saw a lot of progress when we tested in December.  Some of the kiddos went from non-readers to reading at a level 6 or 8!!!  Clearly, parents have been working on sight words and reading at home.  Thank you for supporting our reading program.  If your child didn't make a big jump, it's OK.  Children develop at different rates, and we will continue to meet them where they are.

If you are looking for a way to support your new reader, remember they are the ones that need to "do the work".  They need to use their reading strategies to figure out the word.  They can get their mouth ready, say the sounds, push the sounds together, look at the picture, ask "hey, does that make sense?".  DO NOT let them just guess!!! This is not OK.  Too many kindergarteners just want to look at the first letter and then guess a word and move on.  If they guess, they need to ask themselves, does it make sense?, if it doesn't they need to try again!!!

Sign Up Genius has the new snack sign ups for the Spring Semester.  Be on the look out for an email form them.  Mrs. Davis and Mrs, Strobel sent out the link early in the break.  PLEASE, PLEASE sign up for 4 days.  You may sign up for any 4 days in the semester, spread it out or group it all together, we don't mind. Do what's easiest for you and your family!
