November 2, 2016

It's a wonderful time here in kindergarten!!! Students have been in school for 50 days!!  We have seen ENORMOUS growth!  I'm sure you have seen it too!!

Guided reading is in full swing.  We are meeting with students in small groups daily.  You will see a guided reading baggie every day.  Remember to have your student glue down their sentence on a new page and to illustrate the picture.  It should look something like this.  If you aren't sure what the sentence is - look at the envelope.  We change the color of the sentence so there's less confusion.

Make sure you have your child read the sentence to you.  If a word is missing please have your child write the word on the line.  We talk about problem solving all the time!!

On alternate days your child will have a book to read inside their baggie.  Please have them read the book to you or another reader.  We have read the book multiple times, but mistakes happen.  We want to correct any errors we hear.  Please feel free to have your child practice reading to a pet, baby brother or sister, or stuffed animal, just make sure you have listened first.

SIGHT WORDS

We have explicitly taught the following words. I, see, a, at, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, gray, black, white, brown, to, like, he, my, we, and, the, am, you, up, me, do, in, can, it, no, is, go, so, of, for, she, he, with, what, are, now, how, many, where, find.

The students are tested by using a timed powerpoint.  They have 3 seconds to identify the word.  If they don't know it within this time frame they haven't mastered the word.  Please keep practicing!!

In math we are still working on mastering adding and subtracting from 0-5.  We are suing manipulatives, before moving to abstract thinking.  We will work on identifying the numbers 6-10  next week.  This will consist of writing the numeral, identifying objects and practicing our counting.

We will be reading Duck for President, My Teacher for President, and Grace for President next week.  We will discuss what an election is and who are the candidates running for office.  We will vote in a mock election!  Students will be learning about the election process though non-fiction texts and hands on activities.
